Mangaluru identifies land for the homeless
MANGALURU: In a bid to provide house to the homeless in the Mangaluru city, the government has identified 7.5 acres for constructing G+2 model residential apartments. The land identified is at Rajiv Nagar in Shaktinagar in the city, said Mangaluru City North MLA J R Lobo.
The MLA said Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has received more than 3,000 applications for homes under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Limited scheme from his constituency. The city corporation has commenced the process of identifying beneficiaries and a project report to construct houses at a cost of Rs 5 lakh each has been prepared. The project is expected to provide houses to more than 800 homeless families, he said.
“We have prepared plans to construct houses. While beneficiaries will get Rs 3-lakh financial aid from the government, the MCC will contribute a small portion of the total cost. Bank loans will be arranged for the balance amount,” Lobo said, adding that a meeting of bank officials has been held in this regard.
A technical expert committee has prepared a detailed project report and it has been sent to the government for approval. A separate plan has been prepared to provide drinking water, underground drainage, roads, streetlights and other infrastructure, he said.
“Since we have to obtain government approval for the project, it may take a few months to commence the work,” he added.
