Surat Municipal Corporation to redevelop 13 slum settlements
SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) would redevelop 13 slum settlements in the city. At least 4,350 new houses would be constructed in public-private partnership under slum redevelopment programme for slum dwellers. SMC has got 13 slum settlements vacated in Anjana area of the city. These slum areas would be given to private developers to rebuild multi-storeyed houses for slum dwellers. Private developers would be given additional FSI for their work.
SMC wants to make Surat zero slum city by 2019 and also make it beautiful by uplifting the living standards of slum dwellers. Care would be taken to ensure that the slum dwellers are not moved out from the place of their livelihood.
“We have begun tendering process and received tenders for two lots of 1,500 and 800 houses. Once the tender process is over, we would begin construction at these two places. Slum redevelopment programme has begun from Anjana and would be taken to other parts of the city,” said an official from slum rehabilitation department of SMC.
