Recovery of local body tax, property tax up by Rs 92cr this year in Navi Mumbai
NAVI MUMBAI: The civic body has seen recorded an increase in the amount of taxes recovered by Local Body Tax (LBT) and property tax departments in May.
The property tax department recovered Rs 96 crore this May, Rs 36 crore more than the amount recovered, Rs 59.61 crore, in the same month last year. Even the LBT department recovered Rs 150.18 crore this May, compared to Rs 94.30 crore last year.
The property department did not wait till the last minute to recover dues by issuing ultimatums to attach property and bank statement, said sources. “The property department is required to recover Rs 595 crore for 2016-17, hence it is essential that recovery process is initiated stringently from the start,” said an official from property department. He added that the officials are monitoring the defaulter list strictly and issuing notices for payment of dues.
With the state government waiving off interest and penalty dues on LBT, the recovery process was a major task for NMMC, said sources. “We could recover Rs 150.18 crore this year only because of the hard work put in by the team to identify industrial units scheduled to pay the dues and issuing notice to do so within two days,” said the official.
Civic officials said that they are implementing stringent measures to increase revenue from both the department. They are also holding officials accountable for their actions.
