Mill workers to pay Rs 9.5 lakh for flat on Mumbai’s mill lands
MUMBAI: Mill workers will have to pay Rs 9.5 lakh for a 225 sq feet flat on mill land, announced chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the legislative assembly on Tuesday.
In all 2,634 flats will be made available for mill workers in Mumbai on six mill lands. In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, another 2,418 flats of 320 sq feet each will be given at a cost of for Rs 6 lakh each.
Minister for Housing Prakash Mehta said the cost of construction for each flat in Mumbai is Rs 12.5 lakh but the government has decided to give it to mill workers at Rs 9.5 lakh. Another 11,000 flats will be made available to mill workers in the MMR through the rental housing scheme, he said. The distribution of the flats will be done in consultation with the Girni Kamgaar Sangharsh Samiti. The cost was decided with the Samiti after several meetings, said Mehta.
Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said while the decision was good, there were 1.5 lakh mill workers who were eligible for housing. He said the Democratic Front government had agreed to give free land to those mill workers who did not want a house in Mumbai. Fadnavis said his government would implement it.
