5% property tax rebate till June-end in Bengaluru?
BENGALURU: If you haven’t paid property tax yet, here’s good news. The city civic administration is likely to extend the 5% rebate on property tax till the end of June.
The BBMP commissioner has sent a letter to the standing committee on taxation and finance to extend the tax rebate by a month. The BBMP Council will make this call in the next two days.
Citizens ran into a web of confusion on computing property tax after the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike rejigged the tax zones by shuffling some wards by a couple of notches this year. Thousands of citizens couldn’t – and, in some cases, didn’t – pay taxes either due to a website glitch or in hopeful wait for clarity on restructuring of zones.
Standing committee chairman M Shivaraju admitted to sluggish property tax payment in the first two months because of confusion around new tax zones. “We hope the council will extend the tax rebate till June 30,” he added.
About hiccups in generating a challan for property tax and online payments, Shivaraju said they were working with BBMP’s revenue officials to troubleshoot the bugs in the system. “Since taxpayers were facing problems on property identification (PID) numbers, we’ve provided options of providing other data to access the tax payment form. Now, Form 4 has been included to facilitate payment of property tax of the previous years,” he added.
In addition to Canara Bank, the BBMP has tied up with four more banks. This means citizens can make property tax payment in 400 bank branches in the city. “A BBMP nodal officer is deployed in each branch to address taxpayers’ woes. We’re taking steps to facilitate speedy processing of challans and receipts,” he added.
